Shoes Of Peace

“…and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.” Ephesians 6:15

The shoes of the Gospel of Peace.  What does that even mean?  I find it interesting that as I’m in the middle of an incredibly hard season of anxiety, I end up with peace.  What are these shoes, and how do I get them?

The word Gospel translates to “good news.” And the good news of the Gospel, the we are saved by grace, gives us a peace that passes all understanding.  I don’t feel a lot of peace right now, but I fully believe that I’ll have it again soon.  This is why, especially for me, putting on these shoes is so important to fight my current battle.

It’s very strategic that shoes are the piece of armor that we’re talking about.  When you think about putting on armor, shoes aren’t exactly the first thing you think of.  But a soldier without shoes wouldn’t be very effective.  Shoes allow us to walk unhindered on what would otherwise be difficult, and sometimes impossible, ground.  They allow us to keep our focus on the fight at hand without worrying about the little obstacles that might cause us to stumble.  I think about walking across my parents’ gravel driveway with no shoes as a child.  If I were trying to get somewhere quickly like this, it wouldn’t have worked.  But if I had just put on shoes first, this would have been a quick, easy walk.

Shoes make the soldier prepared.  Prepared to go out and share this Gospel of Peace with the world.  They provide a solid foundation.  They are a necessity.

So how do I put these shoes on?  Priscilla Shirer, in her Armor of God bible study* says we do this with trust and gratitude.  Trusting God and being thankful is the secret recipe for donning these peaceful shoes.

One more thing she notes that I think is important is what is meant by peace.  Peace is not the absence of problems or an easy life.  In fact, Shirer says, “A backdrop of commotion is the best place for the peace of God to be put on display.”

I’ve got the commotion part covered.  Now bring on the peace!
