Paths of Courage

Make me know Your ways, O Lord; Teach me Your paths

Lead me in Your truth and teach me

For You are the God of my salvation;

For You I wait all the day.

Psalm 25: 4, 5

This verse has been running through my mind lately… What are God’s ways and His paths… there’s a divine mystery to it that is worth a wild pursuit.  God is full of wisdom and knows everything so lately I’m feeling the need to be taught by God! Lately one of my go-to prayers goes something like - God, you’re brilliant, please show me...teach me….how to...what to...change my perspective...  Something clicked for me though as these verses were mulling around my head - like following God’s ways and choosing His path takes courage.  Anyone else find that?

I think Courage’s arch-enemy is fear.  But what would happen to our fears if we really knew God has us?  How would our degree of courage change knowing that we are really God’s daughters?  As we’re following His path and being led by His truth, He is really taking care of us, He really has our best intentions in mind!

When I was a little girl, I had this thing called “daddy jumps”.  Basically that meant I would jump from the top of the steps to my dad - at the bottom of the steps and fly into his arms.  I wouldn't have dared to jump to anyone but my dad.  I felt free and fearless because I knew my dad was always there for me, always had His arms open for me.  Can we be like this with our Heavenly Father?

Sometimes worship music will strengthen my spirit and helps me think on God as I'm going about my day.  I’ve been listening to this song by Jonathon and Melissa Helser and I love how it conveys the courage God gives us especially as we know Him as a loving Father.  The simple chorus goes like this:  I am no longer a slave to fear I am a child of God.  I just think we can be more ready to step out with courage as we really, really know that God is really taking care of us.

I was thinking about Moses.  When God literally calls to Moses from a burning bush and sends Moses to Pharaoh to bring His people out of slavery, Moses is hesitant, he questions God and is full of doubts.  His focus on his own inadequacy to communicate holds him back instead of knowing God's infinite brilliance and abilities.  In the end, Moses goes to Pharaoh only when God sends Aaron to speak for Moses. I’d like to think that if God called me audibly from a burning-but-not burnt-up bush, had a full on conversation with me and makes wood turn into a snake and then back into wood, I’d be convinced.  But not this guy...not yet. To be fair, Moses didn’t really know God at this point. God spoke to Moses in a pretty compelling way but Moses didn’t have faith, didn’t know deep down that this God would take care of Him, was looking out for Him.

As Moses builds relationship with God, we see him transformed, a leader full of courage.  When Moses and his people were hopelessly stuck between Paroah’s powerful army and the sea Moses courageously declares:

“Do not fear! Stand by and see the salvation of the Lord which He will accomplish for you today, you will never see them [your enemies] again forever.  The Lord will fight for you while you keep silent.”

I love how God takes us on different paths and teaches us in unique ways.  I got to hang out and talk with a friend of mine, Kirsten Rickman this week about her path and how God is teaching her.  This lady is full of courage! She is a missionary courageously bringing light to un-reached people in the middle east.  She talked to me about the privilege of being God’s friend and from there being a “witness of His worth”.

For me right now God is leading me to act in courage with our business and growing family. I know God’s got me and I need Him to catch me, I need his brilliance, and I need to know Him as I’m treading along the path He’s leading me on.

I I think as we know the Lord, we know this loving, all powerful Father we can step out in courage!  Sometimes He asks us to speak out in courage, sometimes it’s an action, or maybe it's a habitual thought pattern. However the Lord is leading you, He will fight for you. Our Father will catch you as you jump! What step on His paths does He have for you to take?
