Ringing In The New Year Without A Resolution

dune pic STILL The tree is down, and the presents have been opened and put away. The gatherings are over, and it’s back to routine. Now, I’m not one of those resolution types mainly because I know me—as soon as I start to slip up, usually by January 2nd or 3rd. It’d be nice to resolve to lose 20 pounds by bathing suit season, but who am I kidding? First of all, it’s practically been bathing suit season all through Christmas anyway (Mele Kalikimaka, anyone?), and I love chocolate and Coca-Cola too much.

So, I’m sitting here at the keyboard thinking about what 2016 *can* bring - so many possibilities. I’ve decided not to resolve anything, because I know my Creator has a plan for me. My loving Heavenly Father has a plan I know little about sitting right here right now. Of course, for my Type-A self this is often difficult to handle, but I do try to hand over the control when I catch myself meddling in His handiwork. So, instead of “resolving,” I’ve decided I’m going to focus. My focus is going to be on a word for the New Year (the whole year, not just the next few days)…a word that holds significance because I keep hearing/seeing it, and because it’s found throughout the Word.

He still loves me despite my shortcomings and hard-headedness - “He will still fill your mouth with joy, your lips with a victorious shout” (Job 8:21). He’s still in control. He’s still sovereign. If I am still, He shows me things and tells of His love for me.  Still, I can get up each morning anew and go out into the world because He still holds me in His hands - “Yet I still belong to you; you hold my right hand” (Psalms 73:23 NLT). His promises still remain true, no matter the circumstance or situation. “The Lord will hold your hand, and if you stumble, you still won’t fall” (Psalms 37:24 CEVD).

So, I will be still and listen for His voice, look for His sign, which still commands the sun and moon and stars to rise, and the waves to crash. I can be still as I wait for Him, while He is still working for me - “The Lord will fight for you. You just keep still” (Exodus 14:14 CEB). He still longs for His children and still offers us the promise of eternity with Him -“Turn to the Lord! He can still be found. Call out to God! He is near” (Isaiah 55:6 CEVD).  He is still my God and I am still His child, and even now when everything appears to be falling apart in darkness, He is still the light and I can still be His flickering flame. Peace - “Be still” (Psalms 46:10 NLT).  He is still yours…you are still His…still…“Jesus replied, ‘My Father is still working, and I am working, too’” (John 5:17 CEB).

May He show you in the next 52 weeks, in countless ways, that He is still God and He is still good. “But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners” (Romans 5:8 NLT). Still…

Happy New Year!
