Unexpected Moments

PalmSunday_Strattonartist Fred Stratton

A large crowd gathered together around the gate. Hundreds of people were everywhere. It sounded like a riot could break out any minute. All the people were pushing their way through and around other people so they could get a glimpse of what was going on. The noise grew even more and it was so loud outside the temple that it sounded like the city was in a battle. People who didn't even know exactly what it was all about joined in the movement.

Among the crowds of people, palm branches were raised high over heads being waved side to side.  Cheering was heard,

"Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!"  (Matthew 21:9)

Then, slowly a young donkey moved through the body-to-body mass of people. Riding on the donkey was Jesus.

"Blessed is the King of Israel!"

The King of Israel comes into the holy city on a donkey. On a donkey? (Remember Nikki's post last month about a donkey?) A king on a donkey? Wouldn't you expect a king to come in riding on a white stallion with a crown and cloak, being all majestic?

But he comes in on a donkey. How unexpected is that? Jesus' life story is full of unexpected twists.  It's full of those times when you turn the page and your mouth drops open in surprise or makes your eyebrows lift up and eyes get big.

Here's just a few of those unexpected moments:

Emmanuel, God Himself, became flesh on this messed up world to save us. Who would expect a Savior to be born in a stable probably surrounded by sheep, a donkey and their dung?

Jesus, an "ordinary" carpenter, unexpectedly began a movement that would rock this world.

He unexpectedly walked on water.

He unexpectedly makes the blind see, the lepers leap and deaf hear.

Jesus told story after story with unexpected endings.

And of course, Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey?

Then, the climax to Jesus' story on earth...

He unexpectedly gave himself over to the Pharisees, officials and soldiers to be crucified as they waiting for him to save himself.

All of that was no surprise to Jesus though. He knew all that was going to happen - that had to happen - all along.

And then after his death on a cross, three days later he unexpectedly resurrected and was alive again and has given us his Holy Spirit!

Today, God's Spirit can unexpectedly come right on into our lives when we least expect him to.

More often than not, things happen in our lives we had no idea would happen.  Good things and even not-so-good-things.  I know there's been times in my life where I've thought I know everything I need to know and I'll make sure I do everything I can to try to make things happen the way I want them or expect them to. But usually it turns out that God's plan is completely different from what I had planned for myself.  And His way always turn out even better, even if I don't understand it until I reach the other side of heaven.

He loves to give undeserving gifts of forgiveness, grace, mercy and peace because he loves you.

As we approach this upcoming Holy Week, let us join together as a mass of believer and seekers and proclaim out loud through our words and actions "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!"

Because he's coming. Yes, he's coming. Expect the unexpected and be ready to be ambushed by His Love.

{come back soon because we're going to focus on Holy Week - from Jesus' last supper to his resurrection!  Also, be intentional and make plans to attend SMC Good Friday and Easter services!}
